THE PROTOTYPE PROGRESSION

The progression of a product design includes many steps.  These steps can change somewhat depending on the customer’s final intent.  A typical progression might start with a patent search followed by brainstorming of ideas for a solution to the customer’s idea.   The next step involves the engineering and creation of a “virtual prototype” using CAD (Computer Aided Design) software. Once we believe that we have arrived at a successful virtual design, a rapid prototype is usually recommended.

The rapid prototype is valuable for evaluating the function of the design, field testing of the design, determining the form factor and it often spurs additional ideas.   At one time, the prototype could be submitted to the patent office to show viability of an idea.  After the evaluation of the prototype the information gathered can be used to modify the virtual prototype design.  Depending on the changes, another rapid prototype may be desired to verify the validity of the changes.  One example of the progression of prototypes can be illustrated in the development of the REX R1 (Rapid Extraction R1) for RexEMS Inc.

The first image shows the original virtual prototype.  The evaluation of the actual prototype proved that the concept could work.  It also allowed enough definition of the product to apply for the Utility Patent.  The virtual prototype allowed for the easy development of the patent figures.
The second image shows a more advanced prototype with added features discovered during the evaluation of the first prototype.  Illustrating an important benefit of a prototype - the evaluation can often trigger more related functionality or uses.
The last image shows the production model in use.  You can see how the product progressed.  The final product is stronger lighter and has more functionality than the first prototype.  This product design won the EMS World Innovation Award in 2010.

The value of a rapid prototype is great and can not be understated.  For most people, there is a tremendous sense of accomplishment to reach the stage of having a successful prototype.  Blue Dolphin is proud to have been involved in an award winning effort for RexEMS, Inc..  We would love to help all of our customers obtain similar goals in the development of their product.
